SOOTRA is a small brand in Bhuj, Gujarat. One person, one press, and a stack of patterns drawn late in the evening after the day job.

Why Kutch

Bhuj sits in Kutch, and Kutch is craft country. Ajrakh block print in Ajrakhpur, fifteen kilometres from us. Rogan painting and copper bells in Nirona. Lippan mud-and-mirror work on the walls of the bhungas. Bandhani, Rabari embroidery, Mashru weaving, Namda felt, Kharad rugs — a dozen living crafts inside an hour's drive.

We are not those artisans, and we won't pretend to be. Our patterns are drawn by us, in the idiom of each craft, and printed by machine. Nothing we sell is handmade Ajrakh, Rogan or Lippan — Rogan in particular is practised by only a handful of families in Nirona, and we're not one of them. What we take from Kutch is the geometry and the colour. What we try to add is something you'll actually reach for at 7 a.m. Where a design comes from a particular craft or village, we name it on the product page.

The whole Kutch range carries the same twelve patterns across mugs, coasters and bottles.

How it's made

Mugs are printed here in Bhuj — pressed, checked, bubble-wrapped and boxed by us. Coasters, sipper bottles and phone cases are printed to our artwork by a production partner in India, because the presses those need aren't ones we own. Either way the drawing is ours, and nothing sits in a warehouse: each piece is made after you order it. That's why we ask for 2–4 working days before dispatch — it is being made for you, not picked off a shelf.
